Keystroke Loggers
A major client in the financial sector employs QCC Interscan to perform periodic inspections of selected meeting rooms and offices of their London headquarters.
During one of these inspections a USB keystroke logger was discovered connected between the keyboard and computer of a senior staff member’s desktop computer. This device was capable of recording up to 2 million key presses and actual keys pressed on the keyboard, password and log on information, pin numbers and confidential documents.
After consultation with the client security manager, the device was initially left in place and QCC Interscan installed covert monitoring equipment to monitor the area. Our next step was to research manufacturers of the keystroke logger and to purchase and examine similar devices in order to gain access to the device. This enabled us to view the information that had been stored on the discovered hardware key stroke logger. This provided us with detailed information and a pretty accurate installation date and time were able to be determined from the stored documents.
All information stored on the keystroke logger was downloaded and presented by the QCC Interscan computer forensic department to the client. A new empty identical USB keystroke logging device was put in place of the live device. Through a program of intercompany miss-information and the use of the covert monitoring equipment, the person responsible was identified after removing the dummy device.
A full report and statement was provided by the QCC Interscan team leader on site. This report was given to the client HR department to assist in action against the person identified as conducting the surveillance attack.
