Keystroke Logging
Keystroke loggers are physical devices or software packages which are used to directly record user’s key presses on a keyboard or to store information within a program as to the activity on a host computer.
QCC has seen a massive increase in the use of both PS2 and USB keystroke hardware keystroke loggers. These devices are either plugged in line between the keyboard and the computer or installed inside the keyboard itself. These surveillance devices have on board memory typically up to 4 Mb. This amount of on board memory is enough to capture 4 million key presses or in real terms over a year’s worth of average computer use.
How dangerous is Keystroke Logging?
To recover the information the eavesdropper simply removes the device or keyboard from the host computer. Alternatively the host computer itself can be used to access the stored information. The eavesdropper enters a preset pass word in any word processing program; normally a series of key presses that would not naturally occur in normal word processing use. This pass word then accesses a secret menu that allows the stored key presses to be downloaded. A range of other features is also possible including search and filtering. The keystroke logger can then be erased and re-installed for the next period of surveillance.
Keystroke logging devices are particularly dangerous as they record actual key presses and therefore will record log on and password information. Users of internet banking can over time have their internet banking logon information and PIN numbers compromised using keystroke loggers.
Software versions of keystroke loggers go further and will even email screen shots covertly to third parties of computer activity as well as keystrokes and user information.
Specialist thorough physical search protocols are the only way to discover hardware and internally installed keyboard monitoring devices.
How to detect Keystroke Logging
Software keystroke loggers are detected by highly specialised spyware and the forensic analysis of host computers. QCC offers this service as part of a comprehensive TSCM (Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures) programme.
